We've had a lot of folks emailing us expressing concern about the Wallowa River Steelhead Train, and we're happy to be able to let you all know that the train is on for February and March, 2009! Steelhead anglers apparently have been experiencing some problems in finding the info on dates and reservations, so we're posting the press release from Katy at the Minam Motel below. Press Release: Minam Motel and Market, in conjunction with Wallowa Union Railroad and  the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife, offers the fifth year of steelhead fishing by rail down the Wallowa Wild and Scenic Waterway. Anglers will have the entire 10-mile stretch of river virtually to themselves and the steelhead. The wild and scenic waterway is dazzling to behold and only accessible by rail or boat.

The Wallowa River Canyon, located in northeastern Oregon, has been hailed as one of the best steelhead fishing and fly-fishing spots in both the West and America. Come to the Wallowa River Canyon for unparalleled fishing adventures beginning in Minam.  Besides steelhead, the Minam/Wallowa River Confluence boasts four seasons of trout fishing including rainbow trout, mountain whitefish, and bull trout (Dolly Varden).

Enjoy a leisurely early morning ride in a 1950s rail car complete with comfortable seats and facilities.  A guide will be on board to introduce you to the fishery and answer any questions.  Refreshments include coffee and beverages and breakfast sandwiches are available for purchase.  Depart the car along the entire 10-mile stretch for exclusive fishing in the Wallowa Canyon.  The train can accommodate small, personal crafts that can be easily loaded and unloaded onto a flatbed car

The Minam Motel and Market sits on the riverbank of the Wallowa River and provides easy access to boarding the train, 100 yards away.  Double rooms are available for $68.00 + tax and include mini refrigerators, coffee pots and microwaves.  One and two bedroom kitchenettes are $78.00 + tax and include stove, refrigerator, coffee pot, sink and dishes.  For your convenience, the Minam Motel and Market is also a registered licensing agent for ODF&W and can issue you a fishing license or tag on the spot.
